This mode is useful, reliable, and comparable to a situation in which a clearly formulated question leads to a clearly formulated answer. Yet current AI models can do far more. Systems such as GPT, Claude, Llama, Gemini or Mixtral belong to the class of Large Language Models (LLMs). They do not generate answers through fixed rules or databases, but through probabilistic pattern formation across large linguistic spaces. This functional principle enables a second mode of use:
Beyond information retrieval, AI can be employed as a dialogical counterpart that makes human thinking visible, examinable, and flexible through exchange.
In this context, “meaning formation” does not imply that the model itself generates meaning, but that humans, through dialogue, more explicitly organize, test, and iteratively refine their own understanding.

1. Linear Systems Operate Along a Fixed Path

When faced with a clear, technical question – such as a definition or a process query – LLMs behave like classical digital tools: Input → Processing → Result This linear mode is reliable, repeatable, and explainable. It mirrors everyday work situations in which a colleague answers a direct question with a direct response. The linear mode remains important. It is the foundation of any research process.

Alongside linear information delivery, a second mode of human collaboration exists: thinking together. When several people work on a problem, the solution does not arise from a single answer, but from a process in which:

  • assumptions are examined,
  • information is connected,
  • the focus shifts step by step.

LLMs can support both modes:

  • Factual mode: direct answer
  • Thinking mode: joint meaning development

We use the term thinking space to describe this second mode of dialogical meaning development.

Note on the Depth of the Thinking Space

A thinking space is not a neutral space. It takes place within the structures of an AI model — shaped by training data, interfaces, provider assumptions, and platform-specific constraints. For this reason, the thinking space does not replace critical thinking or professional expertise. It expands both.

To prevent the thinking space from collapsing into automation and to keep it a genuine space of reflection, a simple practice helps:

1.1 Openness of Goal The interaction does not begin with an expected, clearly defined solution, but with an open problem statement.

  • “Let’s find out what is happening here.”
  • “Something still seems unclear — we should approach it.”
  • “I’m not looking for the answer, but for the path towards it.”

This form of opening prevents a linear query and enables the unfolding of a dialogical process.

1.2 Dialogical Language Instead of commands or closed questions, formulations are used that allow room for hypotheses.

2.1 Context Feedback (ABC Model)
Instead of a fixed chain such as A → B → C, a dynamic interplay emerges: 

  • C influences B,
  • B influences A,
  • and the next utterance arises from this altered state.

Evidence:

3. Validation: Assessing Dialogical Dynamics

To assess whether a dialogical interaction dynamic was present, external validation steps can be applied.

3.1 Contextual Assessment by Other AI Systems
The jointly generated text or output is submitted to external AI systems for analysis.

Typical observations in dialogically guided interactions include:

  • not clearly AI-generated,
  • variance too high for standard patterns,
  • human stance detectable,
  • structuring beyond typical prompt output,
  • hybrid characteristics (human + model)

Such assessments do not constitute proof, but may serve as indicative signals of increased structural variance and dialogical guidance.

3.2 Reproducibility Test

The same initial prompt is presented to the model again — this time without dialogical opening.

Observation:
The output differs significantly:

  • less depth
  • less structure
  • less variability
  • less dialogical orientation

3.3 Peer-Model Comparison
The same prompting is submitted to several models.
In dialogically guided interactions, models may characterize the output as:

  • atypical,
  • highly varied,
  • independent,
  • reflective,
  • and difficult to categorise
